Unfortunately, her confession only alter Holifield's actions for a while. Shortly, he was back to his old ways. Not only did the affair made things worse, he would drink which fueled his violent behavior.

Ruthie never knew how to tell her family, friends, or teammates about the domestic violence. She never felt like the timing was right. It was easy for her to hide the abusive because she was never placed in the hospital. But the mental, physical, and spiritual abuse was killing the former legend day by day. She decided to divorce Holifield in 2002. However she did not come clean about the domestic violence until she wrote her book, The Ride of a Lifetime. When Bolton realized that her years of abuse could empower others, she found another reason for life.
